Movies I Watched during The Quarantine

As we all know, all of us have been stuck at home for almost four months. We couldn't be able to meet with friends and family, to go the theater or have any human contact. Due to this, with the help of revolutionized technology, we had the ability to stream any show or TV Show any time we want (just as long as you had fast internet connection). During the quarantine, these were the movies I managed to watch. These are the movies that were released during the quarantine.

1. The Willoughbys

The Willoughbys was apparently an original animated movie about children with the worst parents ever. ( You think this is exaggerated but, they really are the worst). Released on Netflix, this vibrant animated feature, not made by Disney, turned out be charming and fun as most high calibre animated movies these days. The film also features Alessia Cara in her first acting job ever and she does as well most. By the way, she sings in it too. I mean, why not right?

Whoever that has watched it, I really hope you liked it because it was really good. For those who didn't, I don't blame you. It is meant to attract younger audiences but I have this slight feeling that this is the kind of animated movie, if garnered positive reactions to it, would not be enjoyed by everyone.

2. Abe

Abe is about a boy who comes from both Israelian and Palestinian descent and he really just wants to be called 'Abe'. His family fights all the time about what heritage he should follow most and to always make them feel better, even if its only for a short time, he cooks. His passion is to cook and instead of going to a basic cooking class that his parents are paying for, he is mentored by a professional chef.

There aren't many cooking-based movies out there but they are always so good and always making me hungry. This is movie is no exception. Abe features a stellar and unknown cast (except Stranger Things alum, Noah Schnapp as the titular character). The interesting thing was that this movie was made by mostly international crew which shows how diverse this movie was.

Movie-watchers will definitely enjoy this (especially my uncle, who made me and my sister fall in love with cooking-based movies in the first place) for its heartful and relatable storyline.

3. Misbehaviour

Misbehaviour is based on a true story about the Miss World pageant that took place in 1970 that brought on a riot against female rights and how the first black woman won the title. Featuring a stellar British cast, was one of the quarantine- released movies that was based on one of the most powerful moments for women empowerment at such different time. Although forgettable, Misbehaviour will be amongst one of the better side of movies based on true stories. The star of this movie is not Keira Knightley (even if she was amazing) but this is Gugu Mbatha-Raw better roles since her supporting role in the Apple TV+ original series, The Morning Show.

4. I Still Believe

I Still Believe is also based on a true 'love' story about a christian boy and girl who fall in college. Sadly, she gets cancer and well.. you know what happens next. (BTW, I am not spoiling you because we all know what happens when someone has terminal cancer).

All I can tell you is that KJ Apa (Riverdale) who plays real-life Christian pop singer, Jeremy Camp and the story of his first love. This story has apparently inspired many cancer survivors and families that have had loved ones that were taken away from cancer and will continue to inspire others with a heartwarming and tear-jerking film that features a supporting cast that includes Britt Robertson (Space Between Us), Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump) and famous country singer,  Shania Twain.

5. Emma

Emma, based on the best selling Jane Austen comedy, tells the story of Emma and how everyone she sets her friend up with eligible, prestigious bachelors but they always ends up liking her instead but she likes that one particular guy but they cannot admit that thy like each other until the end because well, its a Jane Austen movie. I probably have to watch it again because all Jane Austen based movies deserved to be watched more than once. This is not because they are really good but also because British accents are really hard to catch without subtitles. All I remember was that it was funny and worth the watch like every other Jane Austen adaptation (including the Jane Austen biopic, Becoming Jane starring Anne Hathaway).

6. Trolls World Tour

Trolls World Tour is a sequel to the rainbow-filled animated jukebox musical that were beloved by both children and adults. It was also the movie that featured the biggest song of 2018, "Can't Stop The Feeling" performed by Justin Timberlake who voices one of the characters in the film. This sequel is a bigger, brighter, crazier and less better compared to the predecessor. As fun as the music was and also expanding the Troll universe, I think the sequel was alot to handle. But I couldn't help but squeal when Poppy and Branch finally end up together (turns out they didn't in the previous movie).

7. Half of It

Half Of It is another Netflix original romance drama that is, thankfully and fortunately, not based on a book. Written in the poster, this was indeed a different kind of love story. Its about an Asian girl, Ellie Chu who is entrusted to write love letters for a high school jock, Paul to send to the one of the most prettiest girl in class, Aster. The big twist and SPOILER ALERT; Ellie secretly has a crush on Aster as well. (BTW it's not a spoiler, it was in the trailer. So, don't murder me if you didn't know that. Blame the trailer).

This slow paced coming-of-age tale is one to remember. I would recommend anyone to watch this movie when you're in need of a good cry. This is definitely not your typical love story and Leah Lewis is the breakout star for this film with her good-girl-next-door acting that resonated with everyone, including me.

7. Valley Girl

Valley Girl is a jukebox musical rom-com that was remade based on the musical that came out in the 80's. Instead of original songs, it featured covers of biggest hits in pop (and weirdly enough, rock) including an all new version of "I Melt With You" now performed by the American Authors.

The movie is about a rich girl that goes to a refined  high school dating the popular guy in school reevaluates her life when she meets a biker/rocker boy that shows her the louder parts of Los Angeles and life making her realise she should follow her dreams of becoming a designer.

Eventhough the plotline was thin and in a tiny way predictable, Valley Girl was still charming, fun and worth enjoying featuring a great cast that are mostly known for their tv movies or shows.

8. The Wrong Missy

The Wrong Missy, another Netlfix rom-com, is one of the most funniest features i've watched during the quarantine (apart from reruns of Big Bang Theory.. Thank You Netflix for having the entire show able to stream).

Starring David Spade and Lauren Lapkus, The Wrong Missy is a laugh out loud kind of rom-com that is meant to be remembered. The Wrong Missy is a definite watch with your friends on a Saturday night where you're looking for a good laugh.

I was this close to telling you what happens in the movie. If you want to know what happens in this crazy, fun movie, you gotta watch it.
