The Timeloop Storyline Has Finally Reached it's Course (The Map of Tiny Perfect Things)

You know what? I think I am officially sick of timeloops (even if they have no relevance to the story) even if the concept for this timeloop wasn't bad. The Map of Tiny Perfect Things is a Amazon Studios original based on the short story by Lev Grossman who was the author of the The Magicians trilogy which was also adapted in to a five season SyFy original tv show, both stories which I haven't read so, I have no comparison rights here.

The only thing that I can compare this with is every other timeloop property ever made but mostly Palm Springs, the timeloop movie starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Miloti. The plot is basically about Mark (played by Kyle Allen) living in a time loop of the same day over and over again. Things are always the same until a girl named Margaret joins him in the resetting day.

Mark points all these instances around town taking place that are coincidently impossible to the comprehend and these moments somewhat look and feel great. The two decide to map out all the moments that happen all around the town in that day, hoping that once they figure the pattern with all these moments, it could lead to them finally breaking out of the time loop.

The concept of this film is great even if it is sappy yet enjoyable. The film can be considered as a rom com so, a definite watch for the young lovers this Valentines season (even if it's over). Other than that, it can be considered sci-fi which barely compensates the purpose of this film, which mostly is to just get this these two good looking white people to finally just kiss.

The issue with the movie is the time loop. In every movie involving the time loop, there's always a supercut of the character reliving the same day over and over again which is something I'm kind really done with. It is only when the character figures out to break out of the time loop is when the story gets interesting and this film took too long to get there because it was trying to get us invested with the two young-head-over-heels-teenagers.

Their acting may have been good but not memorable. After watching her in Freaky, Kathryn Newton wasn't showing off her acting chops. Kyle Allen could be yet another heartthrob for the girls to die for but I guess it's just me that finds him cute. So if you want to watch this and you also read this review, please don't say I didn't warn you for the sappiness that lies within the sci-fi trope that makes the script a little enjoyable. It possibly might be better to just read the short story than the movie. It's sad that I feel this way when I, myself, haven't read it either.
