Loki Episode 2: The Variant (Spoiler Free Review and Spoiler-Filled Review)

SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Last week's Loki left us with a cliffhanger that we expected to come but yesterday's episode definitely left us breathless and groaning in agony by the time the 53 minutes ended. 'The Variant' is considerably longer than any of the MCU episodes we have gotten this last whole year and it delivers hard-on action, mystery, twists, and the whimsy duo Hiddleston and Wilson happily portray this time around after duos like Wanda and Vision and Sam and Bucky from their respective episodical stories.

Episode 1 apparently has already set everything up and the second episode is basically buckling us up for the rest of the ride which is turning out to be crazier than expected especially since... well, you'll have to watch it to believe me. Everything about this episode is so great that it has the potential to surpass WandaVision's and Falcon and The Winter Soldier's least favorite episodes but it's hard to say since Loki only has two episodes out but from the universal positive reception its been gaining, Loki seems to be the favorite among the content we've got this year.

One thing I really noticed about this episode is that Marvel is trying to incorporate crime-solving duos into this show when it came to writing Loki and Mobius's friendly banter that really makes their dynamic way more enjoyable than what we've seen in the trailers. Mobius still is a mystery to unravel and I know for a fact there is something about him that's yet to reveal itself but I really hope it is worthwhile. On the other hand, spending time with this variation of the God of Mischief who hasn't become the anti-hero we saw in Thor Ragnarok is undoubtedly fun at the same time also unsettling 'cause we've forgotten how unpredictable his younger, more mischievous self was.

Way fewer references were featured in this episode... or at least the ones I have yet to notice, considering I only saw it once yesterday but apart from that, hope this momentum keeps up with the episodes.

SPOILER AREA!!!

Now, for the spoilers. Loki's second episode pours seeds into this long episode for the rules of the Multiverse, how the workers of the TVA meant to perceive the reality they live in alongside the reveal of a character's identity we didn't think would be revealed this soon. Does this mean that Sophia Martino's character reveal isn't the main twist everyone is waiting for and that there is more to come? If the answer is YES, then I am ready for it.

It is revealed that the hooded variant in Loki killing TVA agents is in fact, what fans have speculated these last few months before the show even released - the one and only Lady Loki. In the comics, she has much a different backstory but it's clear the MCU is heading towards a direction that makes more sense and does not involve a reason to kill off yet another character from the core Thor ensemble that introduced in the first film. (For those unsure whom I'm talking about... well, that character I'm talking about is Lady Sif and it involves the story of Ragnarok. Its a long story).

What I am more intrigued by is who is the other agent of the TVA that personally works for Renslayer. Is it Kang? What is the TVA and is it what Mobius says they are. Are the Time Keepers or the TVA the real villain of the show? Is Miss Minutes pulling all the strings? Who knows?

It is clear that the pattern for this show is that we will properly meet one variant of Loki per episode. The first being the variant this show is focusing on, Loki Laufeyson who escaped the 2012 Avengers battle, and now Lady Loki whose backstory is still unknown but will possibly be revealed via villain monologue probably soon. We have yet to meet President Loki, we might be meeting an Old Man Loki, a character Richard E. Grant might be playing if not then, maybe a Time Keeper. There's so much more happening since the trailer provided much more weirdness and I know Marvel loves to keep a bunch of secret scenes never seen before for fans to witness on their own.. so, I know there's way more than we are expecting.
