The Musical That Defined The Last Decade (Hamilton)

Hamilton is the only live-recorded-from-Broadway musical I have ever seen and I do not regret watching it one bit. Hamilton has been a global phenomenon since its debut five years ago on the Broadway stage where the musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton through a series of songs that comprised both the pop and hip-hop genre's and making the final product into a Tony winning musical that everyone is always dying to see whenever they head to New York. But, unfortunately, due to the corona virus, no tickets have been sold for the latest rerun of Hamilton. Thanks to Netflix's current competitor, Disney+, now features a live recording of Hamilton from 2016 and it is available to watch now. I know some of you are not Disney + subscribers but I know you guys watch movies somewhere, right? Wink, Wink.

And also, did I mention that Hamilton made Lin- Manuel Miranda a household name? Well, now you know why. He has contributed in writing the songs for Moana, starred in Mary Poppins Returns and the recent TV show reboot of the Golden Compass, now called His Dark Materials. With that, his other musical, In The Heights, has been adapted into a film that was supposed to release this year but was postponed to next year due to the corona virus.

Now, the story. Divided into acts ( it is 2 hours and 40 minutes by the way), Hamilton recounts the story of Alexander Hamilton, an orphan, an immigrant that travels to New York City in 1776 who eventually works with George Washington, marries one of the Schuyler sisters ( there is a whole song about that for some reason), becomes America's first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, his affair with Maria Reynolds, the death of his son, Phillip Hamilton and the eventual dual against his friend, Aaron Burrns that causes his untimely death.

Hamilton, although it was a sung-through musical, was widely informative for me. I do not know much about American history so, Hamilton was somewhat an educational experience apart from it being a lively musical which I happen to love. The songs were amazing. I understand why everyone could not stop singing them at one point in the last few years. My favourites would include, the opening number named after the titular character, "My Shot","They Schuyler Sisters", "Helpless" and "That Would Be Enough performed by the amazing Phillipa Soo, and every reprise that featured King George performed by Jonathan Groff, who absolutely stole the show whenever he popped up.

Hamilton may not be for everyone, but it is for whoever that has not gotten the chance to see it on Broadway because they either could not get tickets or because they do not live in America, like me. (P.S. It is downright 100 times better than the film adaptation of Cats).
