Gen Z Step Up (Work It)

Netflix continues to provide us, homebodies, with more cringey movies that we can't help but love... especially with the all new Netflix Original Work It starring Sabrina Carpenter and Jordan Fisher. Work It is a dance movie that used to be the rage of the early 2000's (which I would know since I basically have seen almost every teen musical, dance, rom-com during the 2000's)

Work It reminds of an all new generation's serving of Step Up. If any of you have heard of Step Up, you are the best. If you don't, what side of pop culture are you living in? Step Up was the hit dance movie of the 2000's which not only introduced Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan to the world but also was the beginning of an epic love story for them - which ultimately ended up with the both of them getting a divorce, but that is not the reason why I am talking about this.

Work It is possibly bringing back Dance movies and I'm not sure if I am up for it. Even if my feelings are that way, I'm sure younger viewers such as the teenagers today are going to fall head over heels over this the way I did for Step Up. And you will never know, Netflix might make a franchise out of this starring more Disney alums.

Speaking of Disney alums, Sabrina Carpenter stars in the lead role as the smart, Ivy League student whose dream is to go to Duke University, the school that her passed on father went to and had the time of his life there. Going for the interview, she is told by the school admissioner that she is 'Boring' which leads her to lying that she is apart of the famous dance team in her school. She goes back to school in hopes of joining that team only to rejected. So, instead of trying to join that dance team, she decides to make new one that could possibly give her a better chance at getting accepted into her dream school. That was basically the story and don't kill me if I have given you too much because the trailer was spoiler-y enough. Anyways, anyone who has seen a dance movie - such as Step Up - would know how the plot goes by watching the trailer ONLY. Like I did.

I haven't seen Carpenter since Girl Meets World and The Hate U Give. It's great to see her more in movies and especially in a dance movie, a genre I never expected her to be apart of. And of course, she has a song in the movie, which you would only hear in the end credits. Her chemistry with her best friend played by Liza Koshe and love interest starring Jordan Fisher is on point. Don't forget everyone's dancing. They're great too.

Another Disney alum stars in the film and that is Jordan Fisher, after starring alongside other Disney alum, Noah Centineo in the To All The Boys sequel. For the first time, we get to see his sweet dance movies for an entire movie and not just in a 3 minute music video (If you don't know, he sings too. Listen to his songs on Spotify).

SO... go ahead if you want to watch Work It with or without rolling your eyes at every minute of the movie. It is a great movie to just watch without judging it or to just pass time. The soundtrack is great just like most Dance movies. I just watched it for the sake of Sabrina and Jordan and I do not regret it. Stream the movie, if you want to, on Netflix. And if you dont have a subscription, then you know what to do. WINK WINK.
