Mulan is FInally Here

It has been months since Mulan was supposed to be out in theaters until it was so rudely interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. 6 months later, Mulan is finally here. Disney's latest live action remake is also yet another anticipated release alongside Tenet. But did it live up to the expectations? Alot of mixed reviews has been circulating but honestly, the Olive Opinion is the only one that matters to me.

Mulan was good. Not bad, not great but just... good. The film yes, had countless breathtaking shots and the visuals for this movie was incredibly eye-popping but those were the only bombastic things about this movie. The script was constantly safe and I kept hoping for an awesome one-liner but was instead given only one or two inspiring speeches. Don't get me wrong, I am not exactly hating on the movie, I was just expecting more and unlike most, I kept an entirely open mind when entering the cinema.

Everybody else was very disappointed that were no musical numbers and no Mushu in the movie, making it dull and boring but I disagree. Disney was trying to make it 'darker' and more 'mature' by cutting the elements that would contradicted the tone of the movie but the tone of the movie was brought down by the fact it was a heavily PG-13.

Honestly, it felt less than PG-13. There was no blood, no proper violence but then again it is a Disney movie after all and it wouldn't send a proper message. Yes, this movie was aimed to inspire women to believe in themselves and that they can be whoever they want to be as long as they were courageous but they were trying so hard not to influence little girls to imagine killing Rourans.

Although there may have been some room to improve, Mulan was indeed a gem and somewhat an inspiring film and maybe a little tear-jerking. Liu Yifei carried the role really well knowing that she had big shoes to fill as the Legend of Mulan is known to be one of many classic stories that have been adapted one too many times. Also, having an all-asian cast is just as amazing as it was two years ago when Crazy Rich Asians had an all-chinese cast and Black Panther had an all African-American cast.

Then again to conclude this neutral review, If you want to watch Mulan this weekend, go right ahead. If you don't, you don't have to if you don't want to. If you want to watch Mulan just to bash it for being something it should have been which is A) A musical and B) a comedic cartoon with a dragon voiced by Eddie Murphy, then you might as well just stay at home and leave your opinions to yourself.
