A Great Musical To Ease a Stressful Year (The Prom)
You guys know who Ryan Murphy is right? Well, he is considered the King of TV these days with most of his shows being massive hits. From American Horror Story to Glee, Ryan Murphy has broke many television records in multiple American networks, one of them being Netflix, everyone's favorite streaming service (apart from the many streaming choices these days). This year alone has been a big year for Murphy on Netflix with season 2 of The Politican starring Ben Platt, Ratched starring Sarah Paulson and now, feature film The Prom.
The Prom is based on the hit Broadway musical about a queer girl named Emma, who wants to ask her girlfriend to the prom but prom is cancelled because the community refuses to have their children attend a prom that has a 'homosexual couple'. News travels to flunking Broadway stars Dee Dee Williams (Meryl Streep), Barry Glickman (James Corden), Broadway wannabe, Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannelis) and Chicago chorus girl, Angie Dickinson (Nicole Kidman) and they demand to help Emma and opening up the people of Indiana.
The talent in this film is massive and surprisingly, everyone in this cast can actually sing (this list includes Keegan Michael Key and Kerry Washington). The main stars of this film is newcomer, Jo Ellen Pellman who plays Emma alongside Ariana Debrose who plays her closeted girlfriend, whom has a voice so powerful, it outshines Pellman sometimes when they are dueting. (Yes, do not forget that this is a musical).
For me, I thought this was a definitely great musical. Its been awhile since I have seen a good one, especially since the atrocity that was Cats, and makes a better acting job for James Corden in what I think is his best role. I know that everyone is not loving Corden's portrayal in the film but I think he did very well, he felt relatable and managed to make me believe in his acting even if he had many mishaps before. Meryl is, as usual, great in this film (I mean, when is she ever not) and has much more energy that anyone else in this film.
The soundtrack is so good and been listening to it alot lately (but not as much as the Taylor Swift's Evermore album). Each and every song is infectious. Highlights of the soundtrack would definitely be "Dance With You", "Love Thy Neighbour", the closing number "It's Time To Dance" and every song that features Meryl Streep.
