Never Have I Ever Season 2 Review
Never Have I Ever was a Netflix phenomenon after its debut last year, especially making Maitreyi Ramakrishnan a breakthrough star of the summer during the lockdown and it has returned with its sophomore season to give us a front-row seat at Devi Vishwakumar's teenage antics once again because its clear no matter how much we hate it, the teenage drama never gets old.
Season 2 starts out where we left off last season and we get right into relatable Indian family rules Devi once again struggles with. This season, Devi has two guys into her, Ben and Paxton. Now, she has to choose who will make her last weeks in Los Angeles more memorable before she moves to Indian indefinitely.
This new set of 10 episodes follows the previous season's pacing and features just as much laugh-out-loud comedy this show has to offer, but it's hard to deny some moments are a bit far-fetched from its last season but that doesn't make it a bad thing. For some reason, this new season seems to be making itself a tad similar to the sophomore of another Netflix coming-of-age teenage flick, Sex Education. Does it change the way the people will react to the show? It hasn't yet because season 2 just became just as big as its first season.
All of our favorite characters return with a lot more focus towards its supporting roles, making this show a lot more than just the Devi-show (even if it basically is, but that's not what I'm getting at) especially with now two standalone episodes from the point of views of Ben back in season 1 and now, Paxton in season 2.
Apart from Asian representation and reliability, Never Have I Ever starts to lean in deeper to other easily overlooked themes within Asian centric diversified teen media, such as depression, sexuality, and sacrifices of parents in ways we have barely seen before and I hope this show continues to portray these themes in the right ways through the perspectives and expectations of Asian cultures as the show progresses and we all know, this show is far from ending.
So fans, rejoice for an all-new season of Never Have I Ever, and once again, prepare for the end of a very short binge-watch for you're going to be begging for season 3 to get here sooner than later.
