Boys In The Band

Ryan Murphy has graced us with many tv shows for more than 15 years already and around 2018, Netflix managed to get Ryan Murphy to write and produce a whole new set of tv shows and movies for the streaming service while it they also featured most of his greatest hits like Glee and Amerincan Horror Story. Since the first season premiere of The Politician, Ryan Murphy has given us a sophomore season, a Limited series based in 1940's Hollywood, a origin story to one of the meanest Nurse's in literary history and now this, a film based on a play that was revived two years ago after only been played outside Broadway 50 years ago due to its what was thought of as a "provocative" storyline back in the 60's.

Boys In the Band, after winning its Tony Award, was pitched and was given to be produced by Ryan Murphy, the King of Television in our modern age, to adapt this iconic pro-LGBT non-musical play. The film brings back the cast members that played their respective roles in the revived play and made the masterpiece into a Oscar-worthy film that is meant to show the pain and sorrow a homosexual man goes through during such a time where being gay was more spat on than it is today.

Yes, the world has changed tremendously but there are still some room to improve. Apart from that, the film centers around Michael (Jim Parsons), who is having a birthday party for his friend Harold (Zachary Quinto) at his house, reuniting a group of openly gay group of friends. The stellar cast includes Matt Bomer, Andrew Zannell, Charlie Carver, Robin De Jesus, Brian Hutchinson, Michael Benjamin Watson and Tuc Atkins. Most of them are active active Ryan Murphy victims while most are new to me so...

Although a quiet film with no gunshots or car races to make it enjoyable as most blockbusters these days, Boys in the Band, like other movies that get enough or get too much attention, is a 2 hour film filled with sharp, snarky, non-stop dialogue that never fails to make you laugh, gasp or cry. The ensemble cast is fantastic and deserve all the awards an ensemble deserves. The big stars of the film are Parsons and Quinto, with their characters constantly one-offing each other at every glance they catch and it is exhilaratingly sheer fire when they are each other throats using the weapons that hurt the most in this world, WORDS.

The great thing about this film was that it broke the most generic stereotype a gay man faces and that is how they are always "pansy' or "effeminate" when most aren't. The film portrays all kinds of versions of a gay man and how one can be successful no matter their sexuality. With all that said, every gay men has one thing in common, they have had their heart broken to pieces at least once in their life. And this film shows that off very well.

This film may not be for everybody but like Mart Crowley ( original scriptwriter of Boys in the Band) once said, and I am incorrectly quoting him here because i barely remember the exact words but it goes along the lines of "Take whatever you want from it, or don't at all". Honestly, as a writer myself, I'm going to try take those words by heart whenever I publish or release a piece of work that I have created.

Boys in The Band is streaming now on Netflix.
