A Bloody Knockout Towards A Potential-Filled Martial Art Glorifier (Mortal Kombat)

After many failed attempts to make movies based on fan favorite video games, Warner Bros. reboots the Mortal Kombat film by completely making a film that was based on the original game entirely. As a non-fan of the Mortal Kombat lore, undetermined expectations really did help provide a sense of clarity when witnessing a story I knew nothing about.

Mortal Kombat encompasses 'tournaments' between good and evil when a group of 'Chosen Ones' are brought together to protect Earthrealm from the representatives of Outworld. The film lavishly spends an hour and 50 minutes introducing many characters without the ability to catch a breath, giving the audience a chance to learn their names, especially towards audiences who have never played the video game. That flaw, although worth ignoring is a breeze compared to the storyline.

The film rushes too quick to make sure it shows off its martial art/fight scenes that the film barely included any character interactions. Character development completely lacked in this film and there were a few times where I felt like the director or the studio cut scenes that could have been deemed 'unnecessary' even if it would help show how these characters are like without only letting us comprehend that these group of people clearly were able to swear like angry sailors or pull a nasty punch.

The violence was completely necessary considering this was not only a martial art film but with included a dash of four-handed monsters and an martial artist that could manipulate ice. The gore and blood alongside the fight scenes were the only things in this movie that can be praised. From beginning to end, the fight sequences brought hard-punching satisfaction whenever needed. Watching these 'tournaments' is something definitely worth witnessing on the big screen but then again, Mortal Kombat releases online by the end of coming week so... to those 'Kombat' fans who are dying to watch it at home as soon possible, give it a few more days to be able show off your trivial knowledge.

Unfortunately, Mortal Kombat will not appeal to anyone entirely unless they were fans of the video games and will not be bothered by it's anti climatic ending unless you're just looking for a movie to finally witness in the theatres after months of barely being in one. If that is the case, then go ahead and watch this film. Otherwise, just wait for it to VOD or stream online.
