Invincible Full Season Review (SPOILER ALERT!)
The common expectation when it comes to animated shows or movies is its constant need of positive messages encouraging hope or goodwill, leaving us with a happy ending and a good feeling brewing inside you, a feeling most movie companies always try to achieve when making an 2D or most commonly these days 3D animation. Invincible is far from that as it features one of the most brutal superhero stories ever told where audiences should heed in parental guidance ratings.
Invincible tells the story of Mark Grayson, a teenager waiting for his powers to develop so, that he can become like his superhero Dad and be able to save the world. What Mark learns only later in the season, whereas for us early on, that his father also known as Omni Man is the so-called villain of this story. The surprise twist occurs in the final scenes of the very first episode where Omni Man eliminates the members of his superhero team, The Guardians of the Globe, a cliffhanger sequence I guarantee left a lot of jaws to drop the minute the credits started rolling for its violent and bloody way it was carried out.
The season progresses from there with the investigation of who murdered the infamous superhero team as well as government trying to find replacements to make a new team, Mark becoming a superhero of his own, his mother suspecting his father carrying a big secret on his shoulders that he refuses to share and so on and so forth.
This 8 episode long form television show is boldly told in a way most live action streaming shows have been portraying and with it being in animation, allowing animators to show off scenes that feature gore and blood is a step up towards how stories in any form or size can be told. Invincible is based on a comic book series written by Robert Kirkman who wrote and produced both The Walking Dead comic book series and television series so, you can get a rough idea as to how the story could partake in a superhero-like sense. The show features some famous names to voice the characters such as Sandra Oh, Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Zachary Quinto and many more.
I consider Invincible featuring one of the best superhero stories especially told in a series. I am not a fan of blood and gore especially in a excessive way which is how Invincible really tackles the fight scenes and hard punches in this show which is the only thing that manages to unsettle me but everything else is a masterpiece. The inclusion of teenage struggles as a superhero, featuring real world problems and trends apart of this whirlwind of a show is another weird yet plausible addition to a show that would possibly might be watched by young adults. The highlight of course, would be how vast the imagination for this show's creation was absolutely limitless. What really caught my eye to continuing to watch this show every week was undoubtedly the first episode. What appealed to me was not the action it was promised but the slap stick dialogue and its relatable qualities really made this adult-targeted animated show so memorable. From every episode after that, the show heads to bigger possibilities, more bloodier fight scenes and story arcs that get you fully invested.
People would compare this to Amazon's other famous gory superhero show, The Boys, but in my opinion these shows feature completely different stories with different amounts of blood shed. If it were up to me, I would consider Invincible a tad more traumatizing than The Boys. So, for those wondering if you should check out Invincible, you definitely should especially if you are looking for something incredibly dark to watch to pass the time. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime and for everyone else... you can just stream it somewhere else *wink *wink.
