Falcon and The Winter Soldier Episode 5: Truth (Spoiler Free Review)

Marvel Studios really knows it's gameplay when it comes to making TV that leaves us wanting more. This week's penultimate episode really proves that fact. Episode 5, also known as 'Truth', is truthfully the most grounded episode in this show and possibly of all the Marvel Studios based shows that they are releasing this year. Plans are afoot, certain reveals are still not out of the shadows but the final battle is coming and it will be brutal.

After the traumatic events of last week, the new episode really tackles the struggle of gaining the moniker of Captain America and how fitting yourself as a symbol like that has many hurdles ahead, no matter the agenda. With this subplot, it is nice to see that Abraham Erskine's speech to Steve back in the The First Avenger, is the real factor of how the serum affects people. There is also the struggles of what the color of your skin is and really shows off why Sam decided to turn down being apart of a legacy like that.

This proves that Marvel is really setting it out there to the world that these storytellers are no longer straying away from controversial topics. We have seen #BlackLivesMatter referenced in many television shows these past few months, including in one of the first few episodes of TFATWS but this episode deals with that heaviness on shoulders in a poignant that affects not one but multiple characters in this miniseries.

The star of this episode cannot be pinpointed to one but one of them would be Anthony Mackie's performance this week that really showed the acting chops we have seen both Altered Carbon and that one episode in Black Mirror but in a fresh Marvel-esque way, fans will never forget it. Another stellar performance would be Carl Lumbly's character, really touching our hearts with his backstory, setting stage yet another reason for Sam Wilson to give up the shield instead of keeping it but then again, I think it is about time Sam decided to rewrite/create his own narrative, his own legacy.

Apart from that, we finally tie a knot onto characters like Sam's sister, Sarah and Baron Zemo's purpose to this storyline. The Flag Smashers were not featured heavily in this episode due to its focus entirely on Sam but step by step, we also learning their motives as well as everyone else's that are not the titular characters.

This episode is the best when it comes to character development and showing off the last motivations they gain before next week's final battle but with the internet these days, there are probably some fans out there upset at the fact that this episode did not feature as much action as the last four. Luckily, from what I have already seen, lots of positive reaction so far. To end, I would say that this episode was great and I can say for everyone's sake that we are highly anticipating, shaking in our boots, waiting for the final showdown between these characters.
