A Fun, Fortnite-Like Adventure That Promises to Make Your Day Better (Free Guy)

You're probably wondering why I'm writing a review for Free Guy when its due to release in Malaysian cinemas by the 14th. Well, just like we all feared, Free Guy would probably lose a bit more of its ticket sales due to it's digital copy being out, online, today. But for those who want to stick it out until it's out in theatres to finally catch it, be my guest. But for those who are planning to watch it now or at least have already watched it... Welcome and here is my review for Free Guy

Free Guy stars and is produced by Ryan Reynolds as his latest project that is not apart of the Hitman's Bodyguard or Deadpool franchises. However, expect Free Guy to pay homages to those respective franchises, whether subtle or not. Helmed by Shawn Levy, (one of the men behind Stranger Things) tells the story of an NPC named Guy in a famous video game called Free City. Due to him being NPC, his purpose is limited and is stuck to doing the same three things everyday. He decides to change things up a bit and his program starts to branch out when he meets player, Millie Rusk (played by Jodie Comer) under her Free City handle, MolotovGirl. Guy, then attempts to completely change the purpose of  all Non-Playable Character within the game by becoming a player himself which leads on a self-fulfilling journey filled with adventure, love and super fun stakes not worth missing.

Free Guy references a number of video games and movies to remind us that Fox is now officially owned by Disney, allowing them to play around any IP possible. From it's elements to Fornite, and being basically just another video game-like movie seeming a tad more like a cheaper version to Ready Player One, Free Guy is fresh, funny and promises a heck of a time at the theater or at the comfort of your home. Not only will audiences have notable easter eggs to uncover but they can definitely handle the predictable yet fun twists that hack their way through.

Ryan Reynolds never disappoints when it comes to his humour, especially when it came to expecting his dark or slapstick, vulgar humour. This time around due to Free Guy being a PG-13 flick, so no swearing but apart from that, his character is way more optimistic, naive and a breath of fresh air compared to his more violent roles. Unfortunately, seeing Reynolds dumb himself down was unsettling to see when it came to the trailers. Luckily, expectations have been lowered by the time I finally got to watch it and whatever happened in that hour and 49 minutes, made my day happier and filled it with possible 'fantasy' (referencing to Mariah Carey's Fantasy, a song heavily featured within the film and narrative) whether unrealistic or not.

Hearing Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) in an American accent for half of the movie was unexpected. Joe Keery (Stranger Things) was underlined heavily. Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok) as a tech-like villian the way Ben Mendolsohn (Rogue One) was in Ready Player one was an aspect I didn't like to see since Waititi tried so hard to be mean and funny at the same time.

With all that aside, go watch Free Guy today. Recommend to watch in whatever setting you choose, whether its alone or with family. If you want to catch it on the big scree, you gotta wait until October 14th. If you don't well... the digital copy is out now.
