What If...? Episode 4: What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands? (Spoiler-Free Review)

This show just gets better and better. What If...? entertains Marvel fans once again with this stellar new episode. The Watcher takes us to yet another alternate timeline where Rachel McAdams' character, Dr. Christine Palmer is in a car accident with Stephen Strange that kills her instead of severely injuring his hands. This leads Stephen to go through all the other events in Doctor Strange, portraying that in every timeline, Stephen will end up practicing the mystic arts and defeating Dormammu.

However, saving the world wasn't enough In an attempt to avoid her death using the Eye of Agamotto (also known as the Time Stone) rewinding time as much as he could, he realizes there's no way to save Christine because it is apparently an 'Absolute Point' in time (or at least in this timeline) that has to take place. With this knowledge, he takes a dark path to change this 'Absolute Point'. This is where all hell breaks loose and I almost mean that literally.

Saying this every week makes this statement redundant but Episode 4 is by far the best episode. It tackles loss in the most heartwrenching way possible, reminding us once again that Marvel has become somewhat an expert in torturing our most favorite characters, a theme that was greatly done in episodes of WandaVision which is now the most heartbreaking entry within the MCU. Seeing Stephen this way allows viewers to see a part of him that we have yet to see from him in the live-action MCU and knowing Benedict Cumberbatch returned to voice this dark, vulnerable yet power-hungry version of this character will resonate with possibly anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved on.

This episode also really emphasizes The Watcher's role in this anthology series which is that he cannot meddle with these timelines even if it's to steer these people's lives in better directions. This looming, mysterious character has been emotionless and just another narrator for this larger-than-life show but this time around, we actually see him interacting with our character (spoiler alert) while also portraying his frustration towards not being able to help these lost souls. It is clear he is not just someone that's going to introduce us to the multiverse and the variants that reside within it. There is more than meets the eye with this character and I cannot wait to finally witness it, whether it's through animation or live-action.
