The Witcher: Nightmare of The Wolf (Spoiler-Free Review)

The Witcher saga is finally expanding with Season 2 set to premiere in December. However, that's not the only way Netflix decided to please fans after an exceptionally long-winded wait. The Witcher: Nightmare of The Wolf is an anime-style film that works itself as a prequel, telling the story of the Witcher, Vesemir whom later we know as Geralt's mentor in the live-action series.

Although it only took an hour and a half to tell the story before the story, 'Nightmare manages to not only sow seeds for what's to come in the upcoming season but really reminds how messed up this large franchise actually is, especially after how much was introduced in the first season. It is clear there are more we are still missing out on.

Those who haven't read book series nor the video games (unlikely buggers like myself are a part of this list) will enjoy this anime film as much as anime enthusiasts alongside the die-hard fans of the franchise itself. The story is short, which is the only warning I can exploit, that it almost feels like a large episode apart that either starts or ends a season. This is considered a good thing, allowing fans to watch it right before pressing play on season 2 when it arrives, to give viewers more binging content when the time comes because we all know how sad the internet is the minute they finish the season and wait for god knows how long for the next one.

Why did they make this animated? Well from the epic ending itself, it's safe to say that Netflix had saved a lot of money by just making an animated flick instead of a live-action one considering the amount characters and creatures that were featured in the film. Making it animated also made it interesting and you almost forget that the film was ever a part of a bigger picture but instead just a one-off story.

Considering how 'Nightmare is so vital to the plot of the next season, it might be a sure thing for Vesemir to make a cameo in live-action series whether in the upcoming season or the ones coming after that and hopefully, they bring back Theo James to portray him.  With that said, Nightmare of The Wolf is an enjoyable entry to the Witcher universe with just the right amount of gore, violence, and a rich storyline fans might have been craving for since the end of the season 1 hype.
