Don't Clip These Angel's Wings (Charlie's Angels 2019)
I LOVE
THIS POSTER SO MUCH. They look amazeballs.
Now, to
the review.
Charlie's
Angels. 2019.
We have
gotten many versions of Charlie's Angels in the last 5 decades that resonate
with audiences throughout these last 5 decades. For me, I grew up with McG's
take on the infamous angels starring now cinema legends Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu
and Drew Barrymore which spawned two movies and it was also the first time the
angels were on the big screen for that originally it was a TV show starring
Farah Fawcett and a bunch of other actresses I do not remember the names of
because they kept changing the lineup throughout the show's many seasons. And
also it was long-ass time ago and I watched old show like one time when they
were playing reruns on Star World (which is now Fox Life).
Now, 2019
introduces the world to all new angels which I think everyone will love. It was
my first time watching Charlie's Angels on the big screen so, I basically had
the time of my life. This new set of angels include Twilight alum Kristen
Stewart who is much better actor compared to her Bella-Swan-days, Naomi Scott,
breakout star from Aladdin and Ella Balinska who's definitely the breakout star
of Charlie's Angels. This reboot/sequel is written and directed by Elizabeth
Banks and she apparently worked hard for this because I think that this is her
best directing and writing work ever.
The movie
is about Elena whom creates a type of device that could potentially destroy the
world and every bad guy wants it...AhDoy...Townsend finds her and tries to save
her from being assasinated by someone who apparently wants her dead because
someone wants to sell her thing-a-majig to the black market.
This is
where Sabina and Jane comes in. Quickly and not subtly, as the movie
progresses, these three ladies grow and learn to love each other and fight
together like the badasses they are. Whoever said they had to do it alone,
right? Now, you have your new angels. What's cool now that is that there are
angels found anywhere worldwide and Townsend is now an international espionage
agency. Charlie has really outdone himself.
Let's
talk about the cast now. Naomi Scott has been very famous with Aladdin playing
the infamous Princess Jasmine. Now, she's going to get more recognition as an
Angel. Although she was sidelined when it came to fighting for that she's not a
trained angel but if there are going to be more adventures with our new angels,
then I would like to see her kick butt more. It's not that I didn't like her
being the tech genius but to be an angel, you gotta know how to teach bad guys
lessons.
Kristen
Stewart as Sabina is the best thing about this movie. I never thought I would
ever admit any of her roles to be my favourite characters in any movie until
now. Sabina is witty, funny, sarcastic, annoying and queer AF. She is unlike
any angel ever before and will be the most talked-about character of the movie.
I've heard she's got a few more movies coming up and I hope she does a good job
in those movies as she did in this one.
Ella
Balinska as Jane. No words except SLAY. I've never seen Balinska before but
she's just fire. Absolute fire. Her fighting techniques and comfort with
machine guns makes her a very capable and possibly the most dangerous angel in
the trio. What was was scary was that they made her a revenge-oriented
character (watch the movie to know why). I smell an angel about to go rogue.
Elizabeth
Banks had to give herself a role as well in Charlies Angels and that is to be
the first female Bosley. She's also the first angel to become a Bosley so, it
makes her role even more interesting. I imagine Banks taking a long ass nap
after she finished making Charlie's Angels for that she had three jobs to do.
In this
movie, we find out how "Bosley" is not a name but a rank in Townsend.
That's a plothole I think everyone needed answered in the angel universe
because they always changed the actor playing Bosley like in the McG movies.
But as they fixed a plothole, they had made another.
Patrick
Stewart who's also a Bosley is apparently the first Bosley in Townsend and
apparently has known all of the famous angels from the series and movies. This
is a bad plothole for that in the series it was an American actor whom I have
forgotten the name of and in the movies, it was Bill Murray and Bernie Mac (who
was black by the way). Did Patrick Stewart turn magically black in 2002? If he
did, please, remind me how.
A few
good things came out of it being connected to the movies and series is that
it's all connected and these trio is the all new Angels keeping the legacy
alive.
I'm
rating the new Charlie's Angels a 8/10 because it's freaking awesome and most
fun I had in a theatre in a long time. The movie is a girl power action flick
that's going to rock the world and there is no one out there that dares to clip
these angel's wings.
