The Addams Family (2019)

In my generation, everybody remembers The Addams Family from the two live action movies that came out in the 90's which were both directed Barry Sonnenfield and were amazing adaptations of the beloved famous macabre family. The Addams Family was first a comic book series that was created by Charles Addams. It then became famous sitcom in 1960's and came the live action movies and now, the 3D animated movie that I think fans will simply adore even though this animated take of the Addams is a tiny bit stripped down.

Stripped down how you may ask? Well, it's a little less raunchy. I mean, it is an animated movie after all, meant to target younger audiences for this spooky occasion. There were always jokes meant to poke towards sex but it was always embedded in the dialogue and it would be distracted by the craziness that is the Addams Family. The movie may not have had one of those tiny moments but the Addams are still a fun, creepy, oddball family.

The Addams Family now perfectly resemble how they looked like back the in the comic book days from how oval Wednesday's head was to how skinny Morticia's legs were. The animation, even if it was not stop motion, seemed similar to Tim Burton's artistry for visuals. If only Burton did the movie, it possibly would have been more fun but I think he'd rather not tackle this particular family.

The voice cast was absolutely perfect. Oscar Isaac (Star Wars Force Awakens, X-Men Apocalypse) voices Gomez Addams and he sounds absolutely unrecognizable. Isaac definitely got into his Guatemalan roots to give Gomez his undeniable accent. The one and only Charlize Theron voices Morticia and she was absolutely spot on. She did well when it came to Morticia's way of being monotone and lifeless while having personality and emotion. Same goes to Chloe Grace Moretz ( Kick Ass, Carrie) who voices Wednesday. They did change her story arc. Wednesday never was curious about being teenager or going to school, based on what I know of her, of course. How could I forget, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). I dont know if I'm being bias but I think this iteration of Pugsley is the best iteration. In the live action movies, Pugsley was the dumbest family member of the Addams, even dumber than Uncle Fester but I liked that they gave him more to do and a story arc in this animated version.

This animated version is also said to be stripped down by terms of villains but The Addams Family never had crazy villains. They were always villains that wanted their money or were trying to just get rid of them in whatever way possible. The core storyline of the Addams Family is that they are the weirdest family to ever live. So, I didn't actually mind that the villain, voiced by Allison Janney, was an interior designer that wanted to get rid of the Addams mansion for that her newly built neighbourhood has a better view. (SPOILER ALERT).

One thing new in this animated remake was that we got to see the EXTENDED Addams Family. We get to see all these different relatives that had their own things going on. Also, Cousin It makes an appearance who is apparently voiced by Snoop Dogg.

Halloween may be over but it's never too late to catch the Addams Family back in action. By the way, a sequel has also already been greenlit so, it has to be good. In my opinion, as much as I loved the first and only the first Hotel Transylvania movie, I think this animated version of the Addams Family beats Hotel Transylvania and will be a definite Halloween movie favourite amongst children. I will be rating The Addams Family a 8/10 because I thought it was actually good. P.S. don't miss the original Addams Family theme song that will play before the credits roll.
